Summary

“First rate suspense, with a soupcon of horror in the Hannibal Lecter vein。。。 You won’t be disappointed。" —Stephen King

From Peter Blauner, the writer Dennis Lehane calls "one of the most consistently bracing and interesting voices in American crime literature," comes a new thriller about a lone young cop on the trail of a powerful killer determined not just to stop her, but to make her pay。

In the summer of Star Wars and Son of Sam, a Long Island schoolgirl is found gruesomely murdered。 A local prosecutor turns a troubled teenager known as JT from a suspect to a star witness in the case, putting away a high school football star who claimed to be innocent。 Forty years later, JT has risen to chief of police, but there's a trail of a dozen dead women that reaches from Brooklyn across Long Island, along the Sunrise Highway, and it's possible that his actions actually enabled a killer。

That's when Lourdes Robles, a relentless young Latina detective for the NYPD, steps in to track the serial killer。 She discovers a deep and sinister web of connections between the victims and some of the most powerful political figures in the region, including JT himself。 Now Lourdes not only has to catch a killer, but maybe dismantle an entire system that's protected him, possibly at the cost of her own life。

Murdered prostitutes and crooked cops always makes for a good story。

I had a hard time with the beginning of this book。 I am glad I continued reading because it did get better。 I grew up and live on long island。 The author did a great job in identifying areas around the areas。 The corruption was unbelievable and how far people are willing to go to get what they want and to cover up murders。

Finally finished, Characters kind of flat, advertised as a Thriller, but there was no suspence, just an OK Read。

NYC detective Lourdes connects a murder in her jurisdiction with others along Sunrise Highway in Nassau and Suffolk counties。 But not only must she convince her boss that there's possibly a serial murderer on the loose, but also the authorities in the two other counties。 And the Suffolk County police chief and everyone around him are resisting and acting suspiciously。 There's a lot of corruption and things start getting very dangerous for Lourdes and any witness she talks to。 A page turner。 NYC detective Lourdes connects a murder in her jurisdiction with others along Sunrise Highway in Nassau and Suffolk counties。 But not only must she convince her boss that there's possibly a serial murderer on the loose, but also the authorities in the two other counties。 And the Suffolk County police chief and everyone around him are resisting and acting suspiciously。 There's a lot of corruption and things start getting very dangerous for Lourdes and any witness she talks to。 A page turner。 。。。more

Pretty happy until the end。 Kind of fell apart for me then。 Also, do we ever know the story behind the guy in the first chapter who wouldn’t open the door? Did I miss something there?

Totally agree with the reviewer who wrote: "And it is part of a subgenre that really bothers me。 It's the one where male authors write books about brutal (and frightening) violence against women but you're supposed to think it is okay because the protagonist is a strong (albeit troubled) woman。 This is one of those。 And really, it is not okay。 It's just window dressing for what I increasingly thing of as a form of misogyny。"Also there were some weird medical inaccuracies that were distracting (i Totally agree with the reviewer who wrote: "And it is part of a subgenre that really bothers me。 It's the one where male authors write books about brutal (and frightening) violence against women but you're supposed to think it is okay because the protagonist is a strong (albeit troubled) woman。 This is one of those。 And really, it is not okay。 It's just window dressing for what I increasingly thing of as a form of misogyny。"Also there were some weird medical inaccuracies that were distracting (insulin doesn't get injected in the crook of your arm, diaphragm doesn't work if you take it out right after sex)。Overall mildly engrossing but sort of hard to keep track of the characters and too far fetched to really enjoy。 。。。more

A very well done detective story, which also includes the dynamics of race and gender in the mix, as the protagonist is a Latina detective from NYC working a case in Long Island。 Well worth reading for any fan of the genre。

Another perfect read from Mr。 BlaunerI have now read all of his books over the last two and a half decades and have never been disappointed。 Sunrise Highway is a taut plot, not as elegant nor as nuanced as Proving Ground。 However, the last thirty percent of this book as the proverbial s**t is starting to hit the fan, is writing at its best。 Hope another book comes sooner than these last two。。。 I'm not as young as I was when l first read Mr。 Blauner's writing。 Another perfect read from Mr。 BlaunerI have now read all of his books over the last two and a half decades and have never been disappointed。 Sunrise Highway is a taut plot, not as elegant nor as nuanced as Proving Ground。 However, the last thirty percent of this book as the proverbial s**t is starting to hit the fan, is writing at its best。 Hope another book comes sooner than these last two。。。 I'm not as young as I was when l first read Mr。 Blauner's writing。 。。。more

I usually prefer not knowing the identity of a killer in a book。 However, in this case, we do get to know who the guilty is pretty early on。 It was quite interesting to follow two storylines, the one in the present time where Lourdes Robles is investigating one murder who turns out to be the latest in a long line of murders。 In the other storyline do we follow JT 's rise through the ranks。 And, I can't write much more than that without spoiling the story。So, instead, I will focus on Lourdes Robl I usually prefer not knowing the identity of a killer in a book。 However, in this case, we do get to know who the guilty is pretty early on。 It was quite interesting to follow two storylines, the one in the present time where Lourdes Robles is investigating one murder who turns out to be the latest in a long line of murders。 In the other storyline do we follow JT 's rise through the ranks。 And, I can't write much more than that without spoiling the story。So, instead, I will focus on Lourdes Robles, this awesome detective for the NYPD who is the one that through the finding of the body of a young woman starts to unravel a serial killer case。 Lourdes is also searching for her younger sister who is missing and each woman found dead makes her sick with worry that it will turn out to be Izzy。 Lourdes own father is in prison and she is just the kind of badass female cop I love to read about。 Sunrise Highway is the second book in the Lourdes Robles series and you definitely can read this book without having read the first one。 I know this since I haven't read the first book (yet)。 Now I can't wait to read the first book, and hopefully more books in the series。I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through NetGalley for an honest review! 。。。more

Blauner is a talented writer。 I rather like this crime fiction genre because it delivers a structure that works。 Your narrative arc is already there。 It's like the nectarine of the fruit world。 Not as good as a really good peach, but consistently tasty enough and hardly ever truly bad。 Blauner describes the expressions on people's faces in a way that adds to the scene。 His characters have some good inner dialogue, and displays a good knowledge of the worlds in which they are living and working。 Blauner is a talented writer。 I rather like this crime fiction genre because it delivers a structure that works。 Your narrative arc is already there。 It's like the nectarine of the fruit world。 Not as good as a really good peach, but consistently tasty enough and hardly ever truly bad。 Blauner describes the expressions on people's faces in a way that adds to the scene。 His characters have some good inner dialogue, and displays a good knowledge of the worlds in which they are living and working。 There's some sexy stuff thrown in, and some really nasty people。 The back and forth has nuance。 If crime drama is your thing, you will be happy with Blauner。 。。。more

This was a very confusing book and it took me a long time to get into/understand it。 It goes between different characters and years in every chapter and is hard to follow。 A young woman's body washes up on beach in Queens and the detective investigating the case, Lourdes Robles, finds that this case might be part of a serial killer's work that involves some very high up and connected police officers。 This was a very confusing book and it took me a long time to get into/understand it。 It goes between different characters and years in every chapter and is hard to follow。 A young woman's body washes up on beach in Queens and the detective investigating the case, Lourdes Robles, finds that this case might be part of a serial killer's work that involves some very high up and connected police officers。 。。。more

"Sunrise Highway" is the sequel to "Proving Ground", featuring the character of Detective Lourdes Robles。 The author has worked as a journalist, TV script writer, and former producer of the series "Law & Order: SVU"。 He's known for public volunteering as a probation officer and in homeless shelters to research his various writing projects。 Whether that could be characterized as crassly exploitive I suppose is an arguable matter of perception。This eighth novel of Blauner's has a very strong prota "Sunrise Highway" is the sequel to "Proving Ground", featuring the character of Detective Lourdes Robles。 The author has worked as a journalist, TV script writer, and former producer of the series "Law & Order: SVU"。 He's known for public volunteering as a probation officer and in homeless shelters to research his various writing projects。 Whether that could be characterized as crassly exploitive I suppose is an arguable matter of perception。This eighth novel of Blauner's has a very strong protagonist and antagonist, a sufficiently complex plot that shifts between past and present, and good pacing。 Nevertheless, personally I found the protagonist an unlikable character with little to engender the reader's sympathy for her or her situation。 Robles is something of a stereotyped caricature, the impulsively loud-mouthed angry female with a weight problem, a ticking biological clock, and a perennial chip on her shoulder。 The constant themes of misogyny and racism advanced certain plot elements but were distracting where they weren't necessary。 The very relentlessness of their constancy quickly became quite tiresome, almost causing me to quit the book。 (Real life is bad enough; I read fiction to be entertained, not to be bludgeoned with unsolvable societal issues。) It's difficult to believe a young Puerto Rican female character written by a well-to-do older white male author。。。 no matter how much research he's done in the criminal justice system or in homeless shelters。 The writer's treatment of the victims is unfortunate - they are of course all female and merely faceless props with no humanizing back stories。 Perhaps one could say that's precisely the way sociopathic serial killers perceive their victims。 But one would hope even a fiction author would work harder to present them as human beings。In spite of my personal taste, "Sunrise Highway" is not poorly constructed and many might find it entertaining。 Blauner has some talent and I plan to read his first book, "Slow Motion Riot" (pub。 1991) because it won an Edgar award for best first novel。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I don't read a lot of fiction anymore, but I was looking forward to this mystery novel because it takes place on Long Island。 Unfortunately, in this book, there is not one person on Long Island who is not a criminal in some way--corrupt politicians, women who look the other way, cops who are outright criminals, folks involved in prostitution。 The only Long Islander in this book who is not a bad person is an ex-con who was innocent of the crime he was convicted of, and he moved to LI from NYC as I don't read a lot of fiction anymore, but I was looking forward to this mystery novel because it takes place on Long Island。 Unfortunately, in this book, there is not one person on Long Island who is not a criminal in some way--corrupt politicians, women who look the other way, cops who are outright criminals, folks involved in prostitution。 The only Long Islander in this book who is not a bad person is an ex-con who was innocent of the crime he was convicted of, and he moved to LI from NYC as a teen。 The story itself was okay。 You are let in on who the killer is early on--although there is a twist。 The ending circles back to the beginning, which is clever, and I enjoyed the different timelines。If you like mysteries involving cops, you will most likely enjoy this。 If you are looking for a book about Long Island, do not get this one。 (The author even says "freeway" towards the end, as in "she could hear the noise from the freeway。"! We don't have those here。) 。。。more

NYPD detective Lourdes Robles gets a call to a body found on a beach, wrapped in plastic and weighted down, other odd things about it。 No way to tell when or where she was killed, maybe it’s a county case rather than a city one。 Interdepartmental rivalries, of course。 In the course of her investigation, Robles learns of other unidentified dead women in the same general area over a period of decades and begins to suspect a serial killer。 The crimes begin in the 70’s and continue to the present da NYPD detective Lourdes Robles gets a call to a body found on a beach, wrapped in plastic and weighted down, other odd things about it。 No way to tell when or where she was killed, maybe it’s a county case rather than a city one。 Interdepartmental rivalries, of course。 In the course of her investigation, Robles learns of other unidentified dead women in the same general area over a period of decades and begins to suspect a serial killer。 The crimes begin in the 70’s and continue to the present day。 Neither of the police departments want to admit the possibility, but she keeps digging。 There is the added complication of her missing younger sister, who she fears may be among the murder victims。 The county sheriff, politically connected and well protected, is a sociopath and sexual sadist, so we get to see over a period of decades, his crimes against multiple women and his co-option and corruption of cops and politicians to cover for him and ignore the evidence。 The only other investigator she can really trust is her former partner, the crusty retired Sullivan。Sullivan and Robles are interesting characters, but the story and the politics and the crimes are a bit too complicated for my taste。 。。。more

Great opening chapter and an absolutely terrifying (and plausible) villain。 Some good twists in the plot, and I liked how the book makes it clear early on who, exactly, is the main bad guy。 The MC, Lourdes, is an interesting character, but felt inauthentic at times, especially when it came to dialogue。 Good ending。
